Educational Qualifications

Dr. Neena R earned her MBBS from Government Medical College, Trivandrum, Kerala, followed by a Master of Surgery (MS) in Ophthalmology and a Diploma in Ophthalmology (D.O) from the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology, Trivandrum. She is a Diplomate of National Board (DNB) in Ophthalmology, awarded by the National Board of Examinations, New Delhi. Dr. Neena also completed the Sir Ratan Tata Fellowship in Advanced Cataract Surgery and Community Ophthalmology, as well as a specialized Fellowship in Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus from Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai.

Specialisation

Dr. Neena’s primary expertise lies in Paediatric Ophthalmology, Strabismus, and Neuro-Ophthalmology. Her special interests include Neuro-ophthalmology, Paediatric Cortical Visual Impairment, Myopia Control, Complex Strabismus, Acquired Comitant Esotropias, and the management of inherited ocular diseases.

Work Experience

With over 21 years of experience, Dr. Neena has held positions of significant responsibility, including as Associate Consultant in Paediatric Ophthalmology, Strabismus, and Neuro-Ophthalmology at Sankara Nethralaya, Kolkata. She has mentored numerous postgraduate students and contributed to ongoing medical education through organizing workshops, webinars, and conferences on national and international platforms. Currently, she serves as Associate Editor for the Kerala Journal of Ophthalmology and as Chairperson of the Scientific Committee at the Cochin Ophthalmic Club.

Publications

Dr. Neena has a robust portfolio of published research and case studies. Her work is featured in reputed journals such as the American Journal of Ophthalmology, Indian Journal of Ophthalmology, and the British Journal of Ophthalmology. Her recent studies cover topics from carcinoma-associated retinopathy to pediatric autoimmune retinopathy, the impact of COVID-19 on children’s eye health, and low-dose atropine treatment for myopia in children.

Achievements

Dr. Neena has received numerous awards for her contributions to ophthalmology. These include the Best Case Presentation at SPOSI-AAPOS Annual CME in 2016, the Dr. Sankara Menon Award and Dr. Noel Moniz Anterior Segment Award for best paper at KSOS Drishti, the Prem Prakash Disha Award at AIOC 2022, and the second prize for Best Case Presentation at INOS CME 2023. Most recently, she won the Best Free Paper Award (Adult Ophthalmology) at the World Congress of Paediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus in 2024.
